How to Recharge MTN Airtime and Data Online, for Yourself or Someone Else

How to Recharge MTN Airtime and Data Online, for Yourself or Someone Else

The quickest way to top up an MTN line online is from an app that already holds your money: open it, choose MTN, type the 11-digit number, enter the amount or pick a data plan, and confirm.

The airtime or data lands on the line in seconds. The number can be yours or anyone else’s, so the same steps work for a parent, a sibling or a friend who’s run out of credit.

Below are the steps on Snapiro, the other ways to top up an MTN line (USSD, your bank, airtime transfer), and the checks that stop you sending credit to the wrong number.

Recharge MTN airtime on Snapiro

Snapiro pays for MTN airtime and data from your naira balance, so you need naira in the app first. You can get it two ways: add money to your naira wallet from ₦500 with no Snapiro fee, or sell crypto you already hold. If you’re new to that, our guide to selling USDT for naira covers it.

  1. On the home screen, tap Buy Airtime.
  2. Under Select Provider, choose MTN.
  3. Enter the 11-digit phone number.
  4. Enter the amount.
  5. Tap Proceed and enter your transaction PIN.

When the screen says Transaction Successful, the airtime has gone. You’ll also get an “Airtime Purchase Successful” notification. The full walkthrough is in the help centre under how to buy airtime.

Buy an MTN data plan on Snapiro

Data works the same way, except you pick a bundle instead of typing an amount.

  1. Tap Buy Data on the home screen.
  2. Choose MTN under Select Provider.
  3. Under Select Plan, pick the bundle. The price fills in by itself.
  4. Enter the phone number, tap Proceed and enter your PIN.

Plans and prices come from MTN and change when MTN changes them. Daily, weekly, monthly and broadband router bundles are all on the list, and the MTN prices page shows the current ones. The app shows the exact price before you confirm, and that’s what you pay, with no service charge on top.

If MTN confirms the plan but the line hasn’t received it within a few minutes, dial the data balance code below. The confirmation SMS sometimes arrives late even when the data is already there. More on buying data.

Recharging for someone else

Nothing changes except the number. Type your mum’s line, your sibling’s line in school or a staff member’s work SIM, and the airtime or data goes straight to them. They don’t need Snapiro, a smartphone or data to receive it.

Two things to watch:

  • Read the number back before you pay. Airtime or data sent to a wrong number can’t be reversed or moved.
  • Make sure the line is really MTN. People port numbers between networks and keep the old prefix, so an 0803 number isn’t always MTN today. If in doubt, ask.

If you look after several people’s phones, this is where an app beats scratching cards. You can top up three lines in a minute from wherever you are, and every purchase is listed in your History if anyone asks whether you sent it.

The 1% cashback

Every successful MTN airtime or data purchase on Snapiro earns 1% back. Buy ₦5,000 of data and ₦50 goes into your cashback balance. It builds up over time, and once it reaches ₦5,000 you can move the whole lot to your naira wallet. How cashback works.

The same cashback applies to electricity and TV, so if your household runs those through the app too, it adds up faster. It fits well into a monthly budget where airtime and data have their own line.

Other ways to recharge an MTN line

Recharge card and USSD

MTN uses the industry-wide short codes set by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). These are the ones you’ll use most:

What you wantCode
Load a recharge card*311*PIN#
Check airtime balance*310#
Buy a data plan*312#
Check data balance*323#

Old codes like *555# and *556# no longer work for recharging. Codes can change, so if one fails, check MTN’s website or call 300.

Your bank app or bank USSD

Most Nigerian banks let you buy airtime from your account in their app or by USSD. Each bank has its own code and limits, so check yours. No cashback on these.

MTN airtime transfer (Share ‘n Sell)

If you have airtime and someone else needs it, MTN lets you send it from your line with *600*recipient number*amount*PIN#, or through the *321# share menu that every network now supports. The default PIN is 0000, and you should change it before your first transfer. Only main-account airtime can be sent, not bonus credit, and MTN sets the limits per transfer.

If a recharge doesn’t go through

On Snapiro, the status tells you what happened:

  • Transaction Successful: MTN accepted it.
  • Transaction Processing: MTN hasn’t confirmed yet. Wait before you try again, or you could pay twice.
  • Failed: the money goes back to your naira wallet automatically, and you’ll see the credit in History.

If it says Completed but the line got nothing, contact support with the transaction ID. What each bill payment message means.

Questions people ask

Where do I see the recharges I’ve made?

Every purchase shows in History with its status, amount and the number it went to. How to view your transaction history.

Do I need to verify my account to buy airtime?

No. Paying bills, including airtime and data, works before verification. You only need a verified BVN to withdraw naira to a bank.

Is there a fee on top of the airtime amount?

No. You pay the amount you enter, or the plan price shown, and get 1% back. Snapiro’s charges are all on the fees page.

Can I buy MTN data for a router or MiFi?

Yes, if the router uses an MTN SIM. Enter the SIM’s number and pick a plan. MTN’s broadband and router bundles are on the list.

To top up your next MTN line, get the Snapiro app and see every bill you can pay on the pay bills page.
