Income tax is one of the most common types of tax in Nigeria. It is the tax that the government charges on the money you earn. If you earn income from salary, business, profit, or any other financial activity, income tax applies. It is not a tax on what you buy like VAT.

It is a tax on what you earn. Because income tax is so common, it affects employees, business owners, companies, freelancers, professionals, contractors and many other categories of Nigerian residents.

When people talk about salary deductions, monthly PAYE, annual tax returns, company profit reporting, or even personal filing, they are talking about income tax.

Income tax is the foundation of direct taxation. It determines how individuals and organisations contribute to government revenue based on the amount of income they generate.

In Nigeria, income tax is not optional. It is backed by law. The Personal Income Tax Act covers individuals. The Company Income Tax Act covers companies.

So when you hear discussions about tax revenue, tax compliance, tax defaulters, tax planning, tax identification numbers, annual returns or withholding tax on income, all of them connect back into the big umbrella of income tax.

Income tax also helps government regulate economic fairness. Those who earn higher incomes are taxed more compared to those who earn lower incomes.

This is because income tax uses a progressive system for individuals. The higher the income, the higher the tax band.

So the simplest way to understand income tax is this: it is the tax that government collects based on the income you earn. It is the tax that affects everyday Nigerians.

    Income Tax For Salary Earners

Salary earners are individuals working for employers. Their income is paid monthly or weekly depending on their employment arrangement.

In Nigeria, salary earners fall under the PAYE system. PAYE stands for Pay As You Earn. The employer deducts the income tax directly every month before paying the employee.

This means the employee does not need to go to the tax office to pay themselves because the employer does it on their behalf.

Every employee in a private company is subject to personal income tax through PAYE. Every employee in state government is taxed by the state IRS. Every employee working under federal government is taxed by FIRS.

The more the employee earns, the higher the PAYE bracket. That is why someone earning three hundred thousand naira a month will not have the same PAYE deduction as someone earning sixty thousand naira a month. Income tax considers earnings.

This is income tax for salary earners. It is the most common form of direct taxation that younger working class Nigerians experience monthly.

Many Nigerians feel this tax but do not fully understand what it means. That is why explaining income tax in simple language is important.

Income Tax For Self Employed Individuals

Not everyone works for a company. Some people are entrepreneurs. Some people are independent workers. They do not collect salary.

They earn money from customers directly. For these individuals, income tax still applies. But it is not deducted monthly by an employer. They must calculate their profit and file their personal income tax themselves.

Self employed income tax applies to tailors, fashion designers, barbers, hair stylists, online freelancers, photographers, private tutors, small shop owners, event decorators, welders, tilers, carpenters, POS operators, food vendors, gym trainers and so many other independent earners. Even if someone is selling online from Instagram or TikTok commerce, income is still income.

Because there is no employer to handle tax deduction, the self employed individual must visit their state revenue service and do their annual return filing.

This is the rule under the Nigerian tax law. So income tax is not just for office workers. It applies broadly across all income categories.

    Income Tax For Companies

Companies also pay income tax. But it is not called personal income tax. It is called company income tax or CIT. Company income tax is paid on the profit that the business earns.

This is handled by FIRS at the federal level. Every time a company earns profit after all expenses are removed, government calculates tax on that profit.

Even small registered companies are not excluded. Even if the company is not making profit, they must still file returns to indicate that there is no profit. But the moment profit appears, income tax must be paid.

Income tax for companies affects manufacturing companies, tech start ups, consulting firms, digital service providers, hotels, stores, logistics companies, construction companies, import and export companies and all registered entities.

When combined with individuals, this forms a large percentage of government direct tax revenue.

    Why Income Tax Exists

Income tax is the foundation of government revenue. Without income tax, government will not be able to build roads, pay workers, fund security, provide infrastructure, maintain airports, support education, and sustain the economy. Income tax makes government functional.

Income tax exists because society cannot survive on consumption taxation alone. VAT is good. But VAT revenue is not enough to sustain national planning. Income tax ensures that those who are active earners contribute to the development of the country.

Another strong reason for income tax is fairness. Individuals who earn more must contribute more than individuals who earn less.

Companies that generate high profit must contribute more than companies that generate low profit. This fairness principle prevents financial imbalance.

    Elements That Determine Income Tax

Income tax is not randomly guessed. There are specific factors that determine how much income tax is payable.

    Some of these elements include

    • level of income
    • type of income
    • amount of allowable deductions
    • residency status
    • tax reliefs

These factors affect tax calculations whether the person is an employee or self employed. They also affect companies when tax authorities assess profit.

Difference Between Income Tax And Other Tax Types

Income tax is not the same as VAT. VAT is charged on goods and services purchased. Income tax is charged on money you earn. Income tax is also not the same as withholding tax.

Withholding tax is a form of advance deduction on certain payments meant to ensure tax compliance at final calculation stage.

Income tax is the root meaning of taxation. Other tax types feed into the process but income tax is the main direct tax. So when people in Nigeria discuss tax, income tax is usually the heart of the matter.

Why Many Nigerians Avoid Income Tax

Many Nigerians avoid income tax because of lack of understanding. Some think it is only for people earning big salaries. Others believe government is not using tax properly so they feel discouraged.

Some do not know how to register for income tax. Some do not even understand that self employed individuals have responsibility to file.

So ignorance is one of the biggest causes of tax evasion. Income tax seems complicated in many people’s minds. But when explained properly, it becomes clear.

    Income Tax Is Legally Compulsory

Tax laws require every eligible person or company to pay tax. It is not something someone does only when they feel like. There are penalties for non compliance. This shows how serious income tax is in national planning.

So in the Nigerian system, income tax is positioned as a core duty. It is a civic duty. It is a legal duty. Income tax is the tax that government collects based on the income, profit or earnings of individuals and companies. It is not based on what you buy. It is based on what you earn.

Salary earners pay income tax through PAYE. Self employed individuals pay income tax through annual filing. Companies pay income tax through profit declaration.

Income tax is central in Nigeria’s economic system. Without it, government cannot function. Every person earning is expected to contribute. Income tax is a national responsibility that supports development across the country.
