Casper is a significant upgrade and consensus mechanism for the Ethereum blockchain. It aims to transition Ethereum from a Proof of Work (PoW) system to a Proof of Stake (PoS) system.
Difference Between Proof of Work and Proof of Stake
Proof of Work (PoW): In PoW, miners solve complex mathematical puzzles to validate transactions and create new blocks.
This process requires significant computational power and consumes a substantial amount of energy. Miners are rewarded with cryptocurrency for their efforts.
Proof of Stake (PoS): PoS, on the other hand, doesn’t rely on miners but on validators who “stake” a certain amount of cryptocurrency as collateral to create new blocks and validate transactions.

Phases of Casper’s Implementation
Casper’s transition from PoW to PoS occurs in two phases:
- Casper FFG (Friendly Finality Gadget): This hybrid PoW/PoS phase aimed to introduce PoS elements alongside the existing PoW consensus. Validators, called “bonded validators,” are responsible for voting on blocks’ finality. Casper FFG was a step toward full PoS implementation.
- Casper CBC (Correct-by-Construction): This is the full PoS implementation and a major upgrade to Ethereum’s consensus mechanism.
Validators are chosen based on the cryptocurrency they hold and their willingness to lock it up as collateral. Casper CBC is designed to be more secure, scalable, and environmentally friendly.
